Online workshop: The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and its implications on homelessness applications
Law for Life is pleased to announce an upcoming online workshop on the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and its effect on homelessness applications. This forum will be run with Isabella Mulholland of the Public Interest Law CentreLink opens in a new window and is supported by Trust for London. It will take place on the 16th January 2024, 2-4PM on zoom.
The Domestic Abuse Act is a welcome change in the law surrounding survivors of abuse and their access to housing. It has had implications in several areas of housing law, some of which we will discuss during the event.
The workshop aims at building the knowledge and capacity of people working with domestic abuse survivors to use the Act and secure safe accommodation. We will look at the main provisions of the Domestic Abuse Act, particularly:
- The updated definition of domestic abuse
- The limitations of the Act
- The threshold of evidence around domestic abuse
- Ways to challenge unreasonable delay in securing accommodation
The workshop is aimed primarily at community groups and grassroots organisations that work with survivors in navigating homelessness, although advice workers and other interested parties are welcome to attend.
The workshop will be interactive and provide space for attendees to ask questions, familiarise themselves with the relevant pieces of law, and share their thoughts and experiences.
